A R Records showcase – May Bank Holiday weekender

This May bank holiday A R Records descends on the Black Swan in Bristol for a weekend of bass heavy mayhem.

The lineup across the weekend is one of the biggest Bristol will see this year, the main event being the mighty Neurofunkgrid in the main room on the Sunday night.

The main room on the Sat night is a label showcase. Total Science are doing a 90 min guest set, supported by label residents Phaction, Stitch, Defraction, DC and myself Exposure. Hosted by top MCs Carasel, Trafic and Remidy, powered by Neverlution Soundsystem.

These days there are few DJs that are on the circuit solely off the back of their DJing ability, the likes of Randall and Storm are just two that spring to mind, but generally people pay to see producers and unless you have your own tunes, it’s hard to really get anywhere just being a DJ. Although I understand the importance of being a producer, (ultimately it is they who drive the scene forward and keep it moving), I still value the role of the DJ and still book people solely on the back of their skills behind the decks. This thing isn’t just about making money to me, it’s about making memories that people will remember forever.

DC is one of those DJs for me. I saw him play at the Blue Mountain one night and his set blew me away, tight mixing and a great tune selection. Synthesis, warming up the main room for Neurofunkgrid on the Sunday is another; its clear he spends time thinking about crafting his sets, I’m impressed every time I see him play. Phaction, Stitch and Defraction are all good producers in their own right, as well as having serious skills on the decks. I’m also really looking forward to doing a 2hr set with Carasel, I’ve been spending a long time in the studio and have a lot of dubplates I’m excited to try out, including a remix of the 90’s classic Olive – You’re Not Alone which no one has heard yet.

Anyone wanting to get involved and play at a night send us your mixes to and if you have what it takes I’ll put you on.

I hope to see you there for what is set to be a big night in our history and the start of a momentous weekend.

We are proud to present our latest signing; SYK. Better known by their mother as Bastien and Maxime Artigas, they are two brothers from the south-west of France with a love for deep, soulful Drum and Bass.

Early musical influences include Hip-Hop, Dub and Reggae. It was in 2006 when they discovered Drum and Bass at parties in the mountains where they grew up near Toulouse. The pair set to learn how to make it in 2012 and before long a unique style was forming. Always trying to keep soul in their tracks, their aim is to “just do real Drum and Bass” and they have certainly achieved that. Their sound can be likened to Calibre, Lenzman, Klute etc and it is clear this path was a chosen one for these two aspiring producers.

Label boss Exposure says ‘Although these two are newcomers, the music they sent me blew me away. I’m really excited about it, it’s top-shelf stuff’. The forthcoming 4-track ‘Sleeper EP’ on A R Records will see SYK in the highest regard amongst the DnB community. Keep your ear to the ground for audio previews coming very soon…

Onallee presents “Futurism 3.0”

Mercury Music Prize Winner Launches New Solo Concept Show

Onallee’s debut solo show – ‘Futurism 3.0’ – promises to be an extraordinary and captivating night. Utilising some of the South West’s brightest artists and technologists Onallee has produced and written a futuristic story set to pulsating, left field, emotive drum & bass music. The show has flying drones, dancers and a choir all housed in an immersive environment. Onallee has been developing drones for live performance in conjunction with Matt Walsh (Head of Drone Operations at the BBC) as part of her residency at the creative research and development lab ‘The Pervasive Media Studio’ in Bristol. The drones feature as ‘actors’ and there is also an exciting twist involving the choir incorporated into the show. Prepare to have your senses distorted and your perceptions altered… Featuring music created with co-writer and producer D-Product aka Am:So of Full Cycle Records/Roni Size Reprazent fame and also starring the truly original Leonie Laws vocalist, writer and co-founder of Breakbeat Era.

As a founding member of Roni Size Reprazent, Onallee penned three of the four main singles taken from the genre-defining album ‘New Forms’ fighting off stiff competition from Radiohead and The Prodigy to win The Mercury Music Prize. Since then Onallee has toured the world, performed at just about every festival worth mentioning, received a Q Award for Best Live Act, set up her own label and notched up several Gold Discs. This outstanding and innovative multimedia show is Onallee’s most ambitious work yet further crystallising her reputation as a true pioneer and quite possibly one of the most under rated song writers of our time.

Break – Solvent / Exposure feat Mark Douglas – Regrets

AR003 Break Solvent / Exposure feat Mark Douglas - Regrets

We kick off 2017 with our third release and first 12”. The A-Side is from none other than Symmetry Recordings maestro Break, with the B-Side from label boss Exposure featuring the vocals of Mark Douglas.

The A-Side entitled ‘Solvent’ is a ten tonne banger. A haunting arp lead builds with sci-fi fx to the drop which delivers punchy but clinical drums with a battering wall of bass, showcasing Break’s classic harder edge techy production. The ultimate set opener.

The B-Side ‘Regrets’ complements the flip perfectly. Melancholic piano chords and Mark Douglas’ vocals captivate from the outset. Accompanied by layers of crisp breaks, the drop is deep and full of energy. The track winds and weaves throughout, with strings, piano and vox taking you on a rollercoaster ride. A real masterpiece.

This release sets a precedent for A R Records and is a glimpse of what’s just round the corner. Both producers hail from Bristol; Break has been amongst the very highest echelons of the Drum and Bass scene for many years, with releases on most of the major labels, while Exposure has just exploded onto the scene, keen to make an imprint with his unique sound. The two tracks showcase just a slice of the two producers’ sounds, the more melodic ‘Regrets’ from Exposure in stark contrast to the hard hitting ‘Solvent’ on the A-Side.

‘Solvent’ / ‘Regrets’ is out on 12” vinyl and digital now.

FOURWARD – presents ‘Expansion LP’ – 2hr set

Prepare yourselves for a high performance, sonic onslaught as we introduce the most breathtaking drum & bass outfit to have emerged from Austria in recent years, Fourward.

Influenced heavily by the likes of Bad Company, Noisia and Ed Rush & Optical, the collective formed back in 2007, bringing together a myriad of styles into one slick package to take the scene by storm with huge releases on a host of prestigious labels including Virus, Vision, Audioporn and most recently SGN:LTD and Shogun Audio.

Known for their heavy-hitting, no holds barred approach, Lukas, Ludwig, Dominik and Niklas AKA Fourward, throw down with their inimitable sound design to deliver a stunning new album ‘Expansion’ on Shogun Audio.

Featuring 11 heavy hitting tracks including collaborations with Friction, Mefjus, Jakes, Pep and René the results are staggering, from the dance floor ready ‘Sequencer’ to the heart-wrenching ‘Over’ through to the neck-breaking ‘Bite The Dust’, ‘Expansion’ puts Fourward firmly on the frontline of modern day D&B where they look set to stay for a long very time to come.

CYANTIFIC – 2hr set

Cyantific AKA Jon Stanley, has been at the forefront of drum and bass for over a decade. Known for devotion to his decks, pinpoint accuracy in the mix and his ability to construct dance floor anthems has seen Cyantific DJ around the globe.

In 2006, Cyantific released his debut album, ‘Ghetto Blaster’ on Hospital Records, and went onto win the BBC 1Xtra Best Newcomer DJ award in 2007. Releases followed on legendary labels like Critical and Ram.

In 2010, CYN Music was established where his skills both as a talent selector and solo producer shone through.

In December 2014, Cyantific signed exclusively with Viper Recordings, and made his debut with ‘Bring You Love’, followed by his #1 single ‘High Water Mark’, alongside his remix of Brookes Brothers – ‘Anthem’ which was selected on BBC 1Xtra’s “A” playlist.

In addition to that he has done official remixes for two UK Top 10 hits with Mike Mago & Dragonette’s ‘Outlines’ & Dr Kucho! & Gregor Salt’s ‘Cant Stop Playing’ (Makes Me High).

His single ‘Colour In Shadows’ feat Benji was premiered on Radio1xtra with Mistajam and was a 2015 Summer Anthem with the B side dancefloor roller ‘No More Heroes’ smashing the beatport charts once again.

After coming back from a South Africa headline tour and a North America NYE mini tour in conjunction with Insomniac and fellow Viper artists InsideInfo and Mob Tactics, he released his first track of 2016 ‘Outatime’ which immediately went to the number one spot on Beatport.

Cyantific continues his exciting journey to the top…

JAKES – (DJ set)

Jakes has many strings to his bow. From being front man to many live acts e.g T.C, Pendulum and Ez Rollerz to being the head of his own genre straddling label Hench Recordings, he has made a lasting mark on the world wide underground bass scene.

Within a few years Jakes has since evolved and furthered his musical reputation from being one of the big name MC’s of drum and bass world to now being one of the pioneer’s of dubstep. In a very short space of time, the progression towards his now trademark style has been applauded by many – and not limited to his chosen passion.

With a globally renowned stature for genre straddling music and inimitable style and having garnered support from legends such as Joker, Skream, Gaslamp Killer, Mary Anne Hobbs, Zeds Dead and Paul Walford to name but a few, the U.K vocalist turned dubstep pacemaker boasts an extensive repertoire that has only expanded and metamorphosed with time.

Not one to sit back on his laurels Jakes has gone on to produce remixes that have topped download charts, score for films The Black Swan – directed by Darren Aronofski and more recently Offender – directed by Ron Scalpello and release on such diverse labels such as Tectonic, Don’t Play, Power of 3, Shogun Audio, Ram and Slit Jockey.

With all this behind him Jakes looks forward to what the future has to hold.

If you’ve been following the Bristol music scene you’ve probably heard the name. The A R Records head honcho has been busy crafting his sound, with his debut release ‘Delicate Lives feat Sula Mae / Sacrifice’ receiving great success back in July.

Fresh from a busy summer of festival bookings and long hours in the studio, he is ready to unleash a whole heap of new material on the night, plus a lot of exclusives forthcoming on the label.

Still using the much discussed vinyl format on 3 or more turntables, Exposure DJ sets are full of energy and span the full spectrum of Drum and Bass. With fast lightning and varied mixing, he drops fresh unheard dubplates to classics that you haven’t heard for years.

Exposure takes his name from his style of seamlessly blending between the hard and the dark, through to the soft and light, taking you on a journey through everything in between.

Alex Pavlou aka Phaction’s passion for music was founded through a love of drumming from an early age. He moved to Bristol in 2007 where his growing fascination for Drum and Bass music was catalysed by the diverse vibe and nightlife of the city.

After learning to mix and playing out live with high energy sets he began craving a new challenge and sought a different medium through which to express his creativity.

His journey into music production began in 2013. Inspired by the sounds of city and music all around him, his love ranges widely from classical and jazz through to film scores and even metal, which have become intrinsic in the vibe of his productions.

His first finished piece of music was recently picked up by tutor and mentor Arclight and subsequently the label boss of Liquicity. His debut track ‘Someone’ was released on the label’s compilation album Escapism Volume 2 in November 2014 and features the vocals of Katkin Willow, an exceptionally talented singer following a similar dream.

Since then he reached out to Marco, the founder of Fokuz Recordings and has since made his label debut with the Vapour and Stratos EPs, with Stratos gaining support from the likes of Total Science, Technimatic, LSB, FD and Tokyo Prose.

2016 has been a busy year for the fledgling producer, with a remix from Total Science collaborations with GLXY and Hugh Hardie, an EP in the works for CIA, DJ sets at Hospitality Bristol and London and much more.

With an increasing proficiency in the art of making good quality music and releases planned with A R Records for the future, Phaction is set for big things.

Ill Truth, formely known as Despicable Youth, are two spritely young lads from Bristol. They met at Bridgewater College whilst studying music production. Through a mutual love of Drum and Bass and the art of production, this stellar collaboration was formed.

Typically known for their darker soundscapes and rolling drums, ill Truth are rising fast up the UK ranks, gaining support from icons including DJ Marky, Friction, Exposure, Doc Scott, Bailey, Grooverider, BTK, Nicky Blackmarket, June Miller, Ivy Lab, Basher and more.

Their quick style of DJ-ing first got them noticed by Bristol collective Liquifyah and through that collaboration they’re now well established within the city and the wider south west, playing stages at Glastonbury Festival 3 years running and becoming residents at legendary Bristol event Mutiny.
They have releases with Lockdown Recordings, AFT Records, Lifestyle Music, Hospital Records, with plans to release on A R in the near future.

Nuklear MC, a name that people have seen a lot of over these recent years. Hailing from the UK, he first started out on his journey in the world of Drum & Bass in 2009. From hosting local house parties on the mic to performing live on stage in night clubs and at raves across the country.
Known for his solid and low toned voice, Nuklear has a sharp ear for a good beat and ability to pick up on a vibe that will have him laying down his gritty lyrical content, that will compliment the music with cold and dark energy.
Continuing to hone his skills with the music that inspired him, he has learned a lot in the process by finding out there is so much more to making a vocal track than just recording the lyrics and adding a few effects.

Gaining notoriety and starting to work with an array of talented producers, Nuklear has built up quite a playlist. One of his most popular collaborations was released on Eatbrain’s epic first album “Tales Of The Undead”. A monstrous track named “Killcode”produced by Qo and then later remixed by Mindscape, where Nuklear’s vocals sound deep, twisted and evil. One to really get the crowd going crazy and the start of many more features to come with the Eatbrain family as he has said it is his favourite sound. Also teaming up with Italian producer Maztek, notching up two releases, one track called “What We Bring” released on BTK’s label Dutty Audio, and the other called “Crank It Up” that was released on the legendary Renegade Hardware. Nuklear later joined forces with BTK & Optiv to create the heavy track “Ground Shaker” featuring on their “Blackjack LP” released on Virus recordings. Most recently working with Audio & Prolix for the track “Creatures” on Audio’s mighty album “Beastmode” out on Ram Records, a real dance floor killer!

Through his explosive lyrics and dedication to Drum & Bass, Nuklear has gained recognition from figures across the industry and being known for having an atmospheric presence on the live stage. Having worked live on set alongside some of the leading artists such as Chase & Status, DJ Fresh, Nero, Audio, Calyx & Teebee, Jade & Mindscape to name just a few. Performing at iconic venues such as Fabric and Ministry of Sound in London and being a resident MC for the legendary Renegade Hardware night.
By the sounds of it, Nuklear has plenty more in store for us all and it doesn’t look like this guy is going to be slowing down any time soon.
